There has been an increase in the number of reports of fraudulent activities at ATMs. These incidents are not limited to any particular financial institution or geographical location. Below is information that may assist you, our members, to protect and possible prevent your Debit Cards from being compromised.

We urge Card users to be vigilant when using any ATM by doing the following:

  1. Scrutinize the ABM for items that may have been installed over or around the PIN pad. Avoid ABMs with connections pointed in the direction of the PIN pad. This may be used to house a hidden camera which may record your PIN.

  2. Do not use ABMs that show possible signs of a loose or detached card slot, or presence of double-sided tape (used by skimmers to ensure quick and easy removal).

  3. Guard your PIN with your free hand while entering it on a keypad to prevent recording by cameras.

  4. Be aware of your surroundings and any possible loiterers when using the ABM.

  5. Do not accept help from persons you do not know when using an ABM.

The methods used by criminals to capture your data are as follows:

  • Card reader overlays, which look exactly like the genuine card readers of the banks' machines that fits neatly over the machine's card reader. Skimming occurs when in the course of doing a transaction the customer's card passes through the fraudulent card reader overlay.

  • Card reader inserts, which fit neatly into the ABM card readers, and are designed to skim card data when a card is being used to conduct a transaction.

  • Hidden pin-hole cameras are strategically positioned onto the ABM in order to facilitate the capturing of PIN information.

  • Key-pad overlays, which look exactly like the genuine key-pads of the machines. These sit right on top of the key pads of the targeted ABM and captures PIN data when the unsuspecting customer conducts a transaction
